Measure receptive (understanding) vocabulary and/ or expressive (spoken) vocabulary.
How well a child understands spoken words by choosing pictures that match what they hear and a child’s ability to name objects, describe concepts, and use words accurately.
Why parents and schools choose it:
Vocabulary size is a major correlate of comprehension. The relationship between comprehension and vocabulary is reciprocal. These tests aim to identify a child’s strengths and weaknesses in their receptive (hearing) and expressive (speaking) vocabulary and are suitable for detecting children experiencing language difficulties and students who may be at risk for reading difficulties. Completion of both tests allows direct comparison of a child’s ability to understand words versus their ability to produce them. This combination is useful because a child might have a strong receptive vocabulary but a weak expressive vocabulary, or vice-versa.
